Tier 1: tile and metal

Tile (clay/concrete): the CA classic for a reason — shrugs off UV, ventilates naturally via the air gap under tiles, 50+ year lifespans. Heavy and expensive, but unmatched in sustained heat.

Metal (standing seam): excellent heat reflectivity with cool coatings, 140+ mph wind ratings, 40–70 year life. Lighter than tile, faster to install, and the energy story is genuinely good — not just marketing.

Tier 2: quality architectural shingles

Modern architectural shingles with reflective granules perform respectably in Colton heat — 22–28 realistic years with proper ventilation. The value proposition is strong: a fraction of tile/metal cost for solid performance.

The ventilation caveat is non-negotiable: shingles on a suffocated CA attic die young regardless of quality. Every replacement we do includes ventilation verification.

Tier 3 and below: what we don’t recommend here

3-tab shingles: adequate but short-lived under Colton UV — 15–20 realistic years. Dark colors in any material: absorb dramatically more heat (choose lighter colors in CA — it’s free performance).

Wood shakes: beautiful, and a maintenance liability in our humidity and heat — we’ll install them if you insist, but we’ll try to talk you into tile first.

The real answer: system, not just material

The best material installed over bad ventilation underperforms the ‘lesser’ material installed as a proper system. Material choice matters — but ventilation, underlayment, and installation quality matter more.
